A long-term personal project exploring the theme of insecurity, which began with extensive primary research, including appointments at various clinical centres as well as visiting the University hospital training department. Entering these uncertain situations provoked an interest in interaction amongst strangers, and the unease triggered by the unknown.
Are you sitting comfortably? is the manifestation of this project in an installation and performance piece: a simulated waiting area and consultation room, with myself taking on the part of the doctor in a live performance. Interactivity and authenticity are key elements in order to evoke a response of uncertainty from participants; it aims to make the audience self-aware and reflect on their perceptions of insecurity.
The format involved a simulated environment in the gallery exhibit space, with myself performing in costume interacting with visitors, inviting them one-by-one into the 'consultation space' and giving them a custom 'prescription sheet' takeaway.
